Painting by Lewis Taylor

The scraping back of paint, heat damaged surfaces, gestural brushwork and arbitrary, inadequately covered layers of paint. There are pitted surfaces and congealed globs of paint, heavily worked and heavily scraped areas, random colours and accidental shapes.

Using this practice of observing the results of the world in action and using these processes I feel a greater confidence in decoding them and by extension empowering my understanding of how our world operates. My work serves as a reflection of our society and its manoeuvres.

Lewis Taylor

The results of our actions and interactions with the world remain long after the moment has gone. Evidence of our passing through a certain time, place, event is found everywhere and in everything. If my work really has a focus it must be this attempt to explore the environment I am involved in and search for equivalents.

The effects of deteriorating surfaces, the marks or traumas as the results of gestures and motions, the building or design of an area, scrawls of obscenities reflecting the bile of hatred or fickle childish relationships. All of these things illustrate the soul of an area, they describe the emotions and thoughts that pulse through the human frame and burst onto the urban canvas of our towns and cities.

Standing in front of my paintings you are immediately and perpetually aware of their history.
