About onefortyninth
Painting by Lewis Taylor

To move through the world is to pick at its peeling paint, wit ness its arguments and read the obscenities scrawled on its walls. The strobe lit, text messaged, giant TV screened modern world bombards us with artificial reality.

Violence, love, hurt and humour bounce around in a world free of the intellectual snobbery of the past but today brings new demands: a new type of intelligence, savvy, bravery.

Everywhere we look there are human interventions: painted walls, broken phone boxes, graffiti, road signs, and tinted windows which reflect the city's soul. This is the world we have created and it is full of the detritus and aftermath of our passing through it. These interventions and this aftermath provide the clues, the codes which will tell us how this world works, what it says. Here at ONEFORTYNINTH.COM we represent artists who watch this world and say something back.

In the 1970's and early 80's, groups of young artists gathered on the writers bench at the one forty-ninth street station in New York .

Picture by ashwanThey new only themselves and their environment. Their work was a constant struggle to own a piece of that world. They found a way to put colour into a concrete jungle. They reclaimed more than just their environment, they reclaimed their relevance within that environment.

Here at ONEFORTYNINTH.COM, we pay tribute to that attitude and take it as our start point for the artists we choose to represent. We have artists from cities across the world, all with unique and diverse experiences. Their artwork reflects this. Please take your time to explore the galleries and feel free to contact us if you require more information.

As well as providing artwork to individuals, we offer corporate art management and consultancy. Business and art sponsorship is encouraged and commercial commissions for the artists we represent can be easily arranged.
